5 American Hiring Trends to Watch in 2017

5 American Hiring Trends to Watch in 2017 The hiring outlook for 2017 is the best the U.S. has seen in a decade with 2 in 5 employers (40 percent) planning to hire full-time, permanent employees over the next 12 months, according to CareerBuilder’s annual job forecast. 3 in 10 expect to hire part-time, permanent staff, while half of all employers anticipate adding temporary or contract workers. The national survey, conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of CareerBuilder from November 16 to December 6, 2016, also indicates that employers will offer better wages, place emphasis on candidates’ soft skills and reach out to candidates via texts to invite them for job interviews. It included a representative sample of 2,391 hiring managers and human resources professionals across industries and company sizes. Matt Ferguson, CEO of CareerBuilder says: Three in four employers reported that they are in a better financial position than they were a year ago, which is instilling more confidence in adding people to their payrolls. Following a divisive election season, employers are entering the New Year with a watchful, yet optimistic approach. One of the key challenges for employers will be bridging the talent gaps within their own organizations by either offering better wages or by helping to re-skill and up-skill workers. Trump administration’s impact on jobs When asked for their opinion on how the Trump administration will impact hiring in 2017, 23 percent of employers said the new administration would increase jobs while 27 anticipated no impact. 7  percent said they expect jobs to decrease while 43 percent were undecided. Full-time and part-time, permanent hiring The amount of employers planning to hire full-time, permanent staff in the New Year increased 4  percentage points from 36 percent in 2016 to 40 percent in 2017. Employers in information technology were the most likely to say they were adding new employees at 56 percent, a notable 12 percentage point gain over the prior year. 8 percent of employers across industries expect a decline in staff levels in 2017, an improvement from 10 percent last year. 44 percent anticipated no change while 9 percent were unsure. In terms of part-time employment, 30 percent of employers expect to increase their number of part-time, permanent employees in 2017, up from 26 percent last year. Temporary and contract hiring The demand for temporary labor will continue to be strong as employers strive to have more flexibility in their staff levels. 51  percent of employers plan to hire temporary or contract workers in 2017, an increase from 47 percent last year. 63  percent of employers plan to transition some temporary or contract workers into permanent roles in 2017, up from 58 percent last year. Five trends to watch in 2017 Among key trends shaping the job seeker experience this year are: Companies will be under pressure to offer higher pay â€" Two-thirds of employers (66 percent) plan to increase salaries on initial job offers; 30 percent of all employers will increase it by 5 percent or more. Nearly half (47 percent) of employers expect to increase the minimum wage at their organizations and, of these employers, 44 percent will increase it by $3 or more; 20 percent will increase it by $5 or more. Job seekers will need to emphasize their soft skills â€"When evaluating who they will hire in 2017, 62 percent of employers rated the candidate’s soft skills as very important (i.e, skills associated with one’s personality such as positive attitude, team-oriented or dependable). Employers will communicate with candidates via text â€" 41 percent of employers said they will follow a recent trend and reach out to candidates via text messages to schedule interviews. Workers in general will need to become more savvy on social media â€" 63 percent of employers said they expect employees across job functions to have some experience with social media. More companies will be open to hiring workers who are short on experience â€" 55 percent of employers said they will train workers who don’t have experience in their field and hire them in 2017. Hot areas for hiring Of employers who plan to increase their number of full-time, permanent employees in the New Year, the top five areas they will be recruiting for include: Information Technology â€" 28 percent Customer Service â€" 27 percent Production â€" 26 percent Sales â€" 25 percent Administrative â€" 24 percent See the infographic below courtesy of CareerBuilder  for the full annual jobs forecast for 2017.

Be the Product

Be the Product There’s not a week that goes by where I don’t read some article explaining successful people’s morning routines. I’ve stopped reading them as I generally end up feeling like I’m still not doing enough. Feeling bad about yourself is not a great way to start the day. That said, my morning routine includes reading articles that have collected in my digital feed from the previous day. I’m a big fan of using  Feedly to make this easy. I scan through roughly 300 articles a day. One might say it’s a bit of a problem. However, this prolific reading is a great source of inspiration and ideas for the work I’m doing. Which brings me to a conversation inspired by one of those articles: Andrew Medal’s  5 Investment Firms Reveal What They Look For In Startups. You should read it yourself, but the five pieces of advice were: Fix a problem others ignore. When you pitch, focus on the big picture. Create products that have a glimpse into the future. Reach out to VCs physically near you. Have a balanced founder team. Here’s thought for you: Imagine for a moment that you are the startup,  you are the product.  I have no doubt you are valuable to your company because you are a strategic thinker, problem solver, and team collaborator. However, you are not a robot just doing a task. If it’s annual performance review time or not, apply these five pieces of advice to consider your contribution to the team. Fix a problem others ignore â€" do you see opportunities to solve problems and solving them? Remember, it’s not always the “new” idea that transforms companies. Uncovering and correcting current issues can be just as impactful. Focus on the big picture â€" are you bringing all your talents and abilities to the table. I’ve often been surprised that team members have amazing talents outside of their work that they don’t integrate into their daily work. You can bring your artist, athlete or coach to work too. Don’t be afraid of bringing the whole you to the table. Glimpse into the future â€" I’ve made the mistake of expecting credit only for what I’ve done rather than sharing ideas around what I’m going to do. Yes, your accomplishments are significant, but being able to predict and react to tomorrow’s world allows companies to grow and change. Reach out to people physically near you â€" Look around, brilliant people surround you â€" people who can teach you things you never thought you needed. Just because they don’t have the fancy title or position doesn’t mean there isn’t something interesting to learn. Founding team â€" Remember that you don’t have to be alone on your journey and you can’t be everything for everyone. My coach  Allan Milhamadvised me once to build myself an advisory founding team to solve that problem. I can’t tell you the number of times advice from one of my trusted “founders” has rung in my head during key decision points. There’s a ton more I could say on this subject, but I hope this stirred some thinking the way it did for me. Because if it’s true that “you are the product,” then the people “buying” you are might be looking for the same things. Have you created your personal pitch? Something to think about. How Passive Candidates Are Open to Job Offers

How Passive Candidates Are Open to Job Offers Employment is something on which we all rely. It’s a mutually beneficial relationship between employer and employee. Over the years, the dynamics of this relationship has evolved. The onset of the Internet, social media and technology, jobs become few and far between for some and plentiful for others. Regardless of the field of work, everyone has a wandering eye. In Jobvites annual Social Recruiting Survey, they found that 61% of employees are open to or actively looking for a new job and more than 30% of employers expect new hires to stay two years or less. Think about the repercussions of this data for a minute. If every employee transitioned in and out of your company every two years, what would happen? Fast Company recently deemed these workers as “Generation Flux.”  This means that companies need to rise above the competition in their respective industries as well as in the job market. An employment brand becomes more and more important; and driving these initiatives requires more strategic thinking. RELATED: Does Facebook Have a Better Employer Brand than Google

After all, how many of us can honestly say we’d be happy doing the same thing every day for the rest of our lives? There a tons of reasons why you might want to change careers at any point. It could be financial reasons; you could want more flexibility, or it could come down to a dissatisfaction with the industry that you’re in.Whatever your reasons are, starting over can be a pretty daunting task. You could well have spent years building yourself in your current role, and the idea of going back to square one somewhere else is hardly ideal.evalBut if you’re really certain that the time has come to make a change, then here are a few careers that you might want to consider as a new option.1. InvestingevalPhoto Credit â€" Flickr.comIf you’re looking for a new career option that offers you the chance for a great deal more opportunities to make some serious money then why not con sider getting into the world of investments. There are plenty of places to start, from trading small bonds to getting into the property market. But no matter where you start out from, there’s nowhere to go but up. The other great thing about a career as an investor is that it’s the sort of thing that you can start out part-time while doing your current job. This gets rid of the worrying idea that you might have to deal with any period of unemployment.2. MedicinePerhaps your dissatisfaction with your current job is coming from the fact that you don’t feel as though you’re actually doing any good in the world. We all have to make a living of course, but that doesn’t mean you should settle for doing something that doesn’t bring you any joy or satisfaction. If you want a career that involves really helping people then why not consider a career in medicine. Now, you’re probably thinking that a career in medicine is the kind of thing that will involve years of training and exp ertise. But not every medical professional is a doctor or a nurse. From administrative roles to medical billing and coding, there are plenty of different career options available to those who want to work in an industry where they really help people but don’t have the time to commit to years of intensive training.3. Freelance writingPhoto Credit â€" Pexels.comOne of the major frustrations that a lot of people have with their careers is just how much time it takes away from them. If you’re looking for something that offers you a little more flexibility then why not consider freelance writing.evalThere are tens of thousands of businesses out there, all of whom need high-quality content produced on a pretty regular basis. If you’ve got a way with words then why not put that skill to good use?The great thing about freelancing is that it allows you a lot more freedom over your working hours. You get to choose which clients you take on and which you don’t, as well as choosing which hours you work.Of course this does come with the risk of going for periods without as much work as you would like. But if you want to have control over your working schedule, the trade off is definitely worth it.

Inspirational Thought What Have You Accomplished - Hallie Crawford

Inspirational Thought What Have You Accomplished Happy Monday! Can you believe it is almost November? After Halloween everything seems to move over to the holidays. With Thanksgiving creeping up, now is the time I like to take some time to look at what Ive accomplished so far this year and celebrate what Ive achieved. I find that for many of us when we accomplish something we typically take just the briefest moment to relish in it before quickly moving on to the next thing. While I believe forward movement and growth is important (it is one of my values), I also like to remind myself and my clients to consider where they’ve been, what they’ve accomplished and really celebrate what they’ve achieved. What have you accomplished? The holiday season can be stressful for many of us because weve got a lot going on.holiday parties, shopping, and trying to meet our 2008 goals. In our society, we are always going going going, and the pace seems to be picking up with each passing year. As we close in on 2008, take some time and truly savor your successes for this year! As you’re giving thanks this holiday season, be sure to take some time to really celebrate what you have accomplished this year and the good things that are going on in your life. This month as part of giving thanks, when you find yourself dwelling on, or stressing about, future tasks and projects, consciously bring your focus back to the present, breathe and enjoy the moment. Have a great week!
