How to Approach the Second, Third or Fourth Job Interview

How to Approach the Second, Third or Fourth Job Interview BlueSkyImages Fotolia.com In todays job landscape, I am seeing somewhat of a shift into lengthening the interview process. Being called for a second, third and, to some degree, a fourth interview is getting to be the norm, not the exception. The higher up the ladder you go, the more likely you are to have multiple interviews. As an extreme example, one of my clients, a CEO, attended 15 in-depth interviews. Some were individual one-on-one, some were with a panel, and some were with his competition. While youll want to mentally treat all interviews with the same amount of respect and commit the same time to research and preparation, there is a big difference between the first and later interviews. In the first, youve already successfully beaten the majority of your competition as the candidate pool has been dramatically reduced by the time you get to the interview stage. Once you get to the second, third or fourth interview, you are really on the block and the stakes are raised with each subsequent interview. In these later stages of a long interview process, preparation is even more paramount because the questions will be more probing and testing. While the interview format is generally the same, you may meet new people. In later interviews, you are often being interviewed by representatives from other areas of the company, most likely the business unit and leadership team where you will be working. The HR manager who originally screened you may be on the sidelines or absent. If you do find yourself meeting with the same interviewer, always try to answer the questions differently than you did the first time. Use the English language to its maximum to deliver a consistent message in unique ways. Doing this will speak volumes about your ability to communicate. If you know youll be meeting with the same people, also be aware of your attire. Avoid wearing the exact same shirt and tie, or dress, blouse or skirt. Regardless of which stage youre at in the process, each interview is a two-way conversation and meeting of the minds. Take a deep breath, keep an eye on your career goals, and get ready for what could be a long but fruitful journey ahead.

Lack of Experience Leaves Half of 2012 College Grads Jobless, Underemployed

Absence of Experience Leaves Half of 2012 College Grads Jobless, Underemployed They read for quite a long time. They met the prerequisites. Gladly, they strolled over the phase to get their desired degrees. However, a huge number of late school graduates are getting a not all that wonderful profit for their instructive speculations: joblessness. As indicated by an examination by the Associated Press, the greater part, or 53 percent, of the country's ongoing school graduates are jobless or underemployed, the most elevated offer in 11 years. Graduates are exchanging their fantasy places of architects, specialists and one-day CEOs for retail, food-administration and distribution center employments. The AP reports: About 1.5 million, or 53.6 percent, of single guys degree-holders younger than 25 a year ago were jobless or underemployed, the most noteworthy offer in at any rate 11 years. In 2000, the offer was at a low of 41 percent, before the website bust eradicated work gains for school graduates in the media communications and IT fields. Out of the 1.5 million who mulled in the activity showcase, about half were underemployed, an expansion from the earlier year. While science, training and wellbeing related degrees are faring admirably, those previous understudies holding degrees in the humanities and expressions can't state the equivalent. Graduates are maintaining sources of income that either don't require a four year college education or don't use their abilities or information. To compound an already painful situation, the AP detailed that the middle wages for those having unhitched males degrees are down from 2000. With the constant increment in school educational cost, gigantic measures of obligation and an apparently disheartening activity standpoint, numerous pre-and-post graduates are addressing whether an advanced education is really worth the money related venture. Things being what they are, right? As an ongoing alumni of the 2012 class â€" a quarter of a year to be careful â€" I can genuinely say that this inquiry has become increasingly more confused to reply. I know numerous individuals who have moved on from school in the previous two years who fall into the un or under classes with regards to business. One individual I know did a quickened, yet thorough and costly degree-program. He got a four year certification in only two years, piled on more than $40,000 in understudy advances and has been working in retail since he graduated. Another alumni I know couldn't get a new line of work with her advertising degree and wound up moving back home and filling in as a clerk at a neighborhood supermarket. There are various comparable stories. However, I know a few stories with an alternate closure. My individual 2012 alumni have found occupations at organizations, for example, Bloomberg, CNN and Teach for America. Some got acknowledged into law and clinical schools, others are attempting to begin their own organizations. What's the distinction? Jordan Weissmann, partner editorial manager at The Atlantic, summarizes it in his article on the joblessness emergency: It's about the range of abilities. Presently like never before, degrees can't remain all alone. They should be upheld by experience. Temporary jobs, associations, research and charitable effort: These are the things selection representatives and bosses search for past the B.A's. and B.S.'s. A higher education shows an understudy was equipped for finishing requesting prerequisites and picked up information in a specific territory after some time. The extracurricular exercises, for example, temporary jobs, show how the person in question exhibited their comprehension by rehearsing and consummating the abilities the individual scholarly while in quest for the degree. Degrees do in any case make a difference; they are as yet required for most current positions. However, similarly as critically, undergrads need to concentrate on building the fundamental abilities for future employment accomplishment through hands-on, commonsense experience.

Laid Off Strategies to Help You Locate a New Job

Laid Off Strategies to Help You Locate a New Job Over the years Ive engaged with people of multiple professions facing unplanned work releases due to the economy, company downsizing, organizational restructuring, or business closure. The recent coronavirus outbreak is a new situation that has resulted in millions of people around the world being suddenly laid off, furloughed, and out of work. Some common questions I am receiving from recently laid-off workers include: 1. How do I best commence a job search? 2. What are some modern job search strategies that I should be aware of and employ? 3. Where can I get current information and assistance? The answer to these questions can vary from person to person and situation to situation, but overall there are common themes and strategies that apply. The key to starting a job search is to simply get started. Many people take a denial vacation when they are first laid off, thinking if they simply avoid the problem, it will go away. Unfortunately, it won’t. Job searching in today’s competitive market means that job seekers must engage in savvy strategies to get themselves noticed and selected among a sea of competitors. So although its OK to take a few days off to clear your head, you want to try to commence your job search as soon as possible. Develop and Execute An Action Plan To help keep your job search focused and on track, create an action plan and start executing it. This plan should include a number of modern job search strategies, including: 1. Research: From the comfort of your home, go online and start researching industries and companies that are currently hiring. Identify and explore companies of interest and then locate key decision-makers or personal connections in these organizations. LinkedIn is a great site to research and connect with people of interest. Arm yourself with as much information as possible to support search efforts. 2. Network: Network often and consistently (virtually). Often, jobs aren’t posted so you need to leverage your network to identify possible leads, opportunities, or unadvertised openings. If you continuously network you will build a robust group of connections to support both your current job search and future employment endeavours. Aim to create relationships so people can become internal champions for you within target organizations. Referrals can escalate application chances. 3. Ask quality questions: Instead of simply asking people to help you find a job, spend efforts inquiring about opportunities, leads, or information that will support your job plan. For example, if there is a company that interests you, try to connect with people who work there to learn about the company culture. Or, seek an introduction to a person working in a field or role of interest and ask them how they got their placement. The more information you are armed with, the better career decisions you can make. 4. Build a strong online presence: Ensure your LinkedIn profile is complete with current content, industry keywords, and clear value to help get you passively located by employers and recruiters. Almost all recruiters are on LinkedIn, so you must be, too. Increase your online visibility by consistently engaging on the site.   Share thought leadership posts related to your field, post thoughtful and engaging comments on posts, and build connections with key decision-makers. 5. Update career tools: Include recent employment and career achievements on your resume, and be prepared to customize content for every application. Employers need a clear demonstration of why you are the best candidate for them. A generic resume will not cut it. You need a resume that directly aligns your skill sets with each job’s requirements, especially if your resume might be read by an applicant tracking system. Create a Routine Task List Next, create a daily or weekly task list to organize your actions. Allocate dedicated time each day to focus on your job search. Without a systematic approach, you might find yourself going about the above strategies in a haphazard way, causing a slowing of momentum or motivation. A weekly task list might include the following: • Conduct 30 minutes of online research each day to help build a target company list. • Carefully evaluate 2 companies of interest. Check out websites and LinkedIn company pages to learn more. • Reach out to 3 contacts with a meaningful message. Most people have something in common right now (challenging times). Reach out to ask how people are doing to re-engage in conversations. • Request an informational interview or virtual coffee date with a friend or connection who works at a company of interest. Ask this person for additional leads. • Brainstorm 3 new career achievements and use them to update your resume or LinkedIn profile. Keep and maintain a brag file to help with ongoing updates. • Invest in learning to expand skillsets. Look for online classes, workshops, or seminars that you can complete from home. A job search is often likened to a marathon, not a sprint. It is going to take time and some serious effort. To keep yourself focused and engaged, especially during periods of doubt and increased anxiety, keep yourself accountable with a task list. Access Current Information and Assistance For many, every day of unemployment builds stress and uncertainty, yet the time it takes someone to find work will vary, factoring in the type of role being sought, the number of openings in the target area (who is hiring and where), a person’s qualifications, the efforts of the job seeker, and of course the economy itself which we all know is currently struggling. Many companies are laying off, but many companies are also hiring. Remember, remain active. Now is not the time to pause efforts! To access current hiring information (which may be changing day to day): Conduct specific Google searches for your target job and region. For example: Project Manager Alberta or Business Development Director Toronto can narrow results. Read the news to identify what companies or industries are hiring (add these companies to your target list if a potential match exists). Go to job boards and look for current postings. Jobs posted in the last 2 weeks are likely the most recent and active. Search for, and join job search groups. Do any exist in your community, online? Visit LinkedIn and use the hashtags #coronavirushiring or #hiringnow to locate postings. Read your LinkedIn feed for information, postings, or insights. Follow key decision-makers or companies of interest on social media. Set up Google alerts to get notified when certain job postings or hiring details are published. Finally, remember that job searching is a tough task, but it isn’t a task you have to go about alone. Put together a team of trusted individuals that you can turn to for advice or keep you motivated and accountable. These people may include certified career coaches, resume writers, or employment experts along with supportive friends or family. Valuable Lessons I Learned From The Worst Boss I Ever Had

Important Lessons I Learned From The Worst Boss I Ever Had Important Lessons I Learned From The Worst Boss I Ever HadPosted March 5, 2013, by Josie ChunOnce upon a period in a world far, far away, I was a youthful uni graduate searching for a passage level position that could, just, lead to a 'vocation'. I didn't generally have the foggiest idea what I needed to do, however I was all the way open and the world was my shellfish. I had an ace's specialties degree added to my repertoire from the nation's most regarded college, I had done my exploring trip around Europe, and now I was prepared to handle a 'genuine' work. It just so happens, I figured out how to get my foot in the entryway of a huge media association. It was a humble position yet I was working for one of the nation's most notable and very much regarded telecom characters. It was the ideal beginning to my splendid vocation â€" or so I thought. Through the span of the next months I was frightened to see that everything was not what it appeared in TV wonderland. My chief, specifical ly, end up being somewhat not quite the same as what I had envisioned. She was imperious, egomaniacal and savage, with no time or kindness for any individual who wasn't 'significant'; and by treating everybody like a flunky, with just the Executive Producer as her compatriot, she made a domain of distrustfulness not at all subtle by a facade of phony brotherhood. At my post employment survey, before I (fortunately) left for Australia, her splitting words to me were: 'around here, you need to eat sh*t and swallow it'. On the off chance that that is the thing that it took to excel there, I realized it wasn't the spot for me. As negative as this experience would sound, it was one of the most significant expert encounters of my life since it constrained me to truly consider what was critical to me, what my guiding principle were, and what I was and was not ready to bargain for my vocation. It additionally showed me precisely what sort of supervisor I would trust never to be. So to any i ndividual who is battling in an occupation that makes them hopeless, or working for somebody who they scorn, cheer up â€" this is assisting with explaining what you need and what's critical to you, and you'll have taken in some incredibly helpful exercises that you will convey for a mind-blowing remainder. For me by and by, there were two significant exercises I detracted from my brush with the sovereign honey bee Boss From Hell:Treat individuals â€" everybody â€" with respectMy experience just assisted with fortifying what, for me, is a guiding principle: that everybody, regardless of their position, ought to be treated with deference. I accept that everybody merits this and makes their commitment, and I don't accept the world ought to be partitioned into the 'significant' and 'insignificant'. I couldn't care less what your identity is, nobody has the right to be dealt with like toe jam since they aren't rich and celebrated or don't have an extravagant title. No work merits bargaini ng your self-respectEveryone has their own cutoff points and for a few, excelling legitimizes whatever implies. However, for me, I realized I would never get by in a situation where cowering and 'sh*t-gulping' was normal as guaranteed. Doing humble undertakings isn't an issue, and you can at present do those with your respectability flawless. Yet, on the off chance that your activity leaves you feeling yucky, debilitated and like you've offered your spirit to the villain, at that point you have an issue.
